Apple announced a wide variety of new products today, including 2 new iPad models. We'll take a look at both of them here to show you what's new and how they'll benefit pilots.
AirVenture Oshkosh iPad seminars available for review
The iPad was bigger than ever at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this year, with over 40 educational seminars on the topic and lots of new iPad product and app news. iOS 8.4 now available, fixes external GPS bug
As expected, Apple released the iOS 8.4 update today for iPhone and iPad. While most of the buzz centers around the new Apple Music service instroduced in this update, pilots will be happy to hear that it also fixes the iOS 8.3 bug that prevented the use of many external GPS receivers with the iPad.
Fix coming soon for iOS 8.3 GPS bug
In addition to releasing details on the fall release of iOS 9, Apple also informed developers at their annual conference that a fix will be out for the external GPS bug in the upcoming iOS 8.4 update. This should be available by June 30th at the latest.
New FAA app designed for drone pilots
One of the hottest industries in the world right now is Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), often called drones. The FAA is working to help pilots in this segment with a new app called B4UFLY, designed to let users know if it is safe and legal to fly a a drone in their current or planned location.

Issues with iOS 8.3 update and external GPS receivers
The iOS 8.3 software update from Apple last week disables the location services provided by several Bluetooth GPS receivers. For now we strongly recommend holding off on updating the iOS software on your iPhone or iPad until Apple issues another update.
ForeFlight moves beyond DUATS
ForeFlight has gone one step further in its transition away from DUATS services by integrating a new Lockheed Martin route tool for improved flight planning. They're also recommending pilots discontinue using the DUATS weather briefing tool in the app.
