The Sporty’s Pilot Training app has steadily evolved from a course viewer into one of the most capable aviation training platforms available for pilots using the iPad. The latest addition continues that trend, with PilotWorkshops’ popular VFR Mastery and IFR Mastery series now fully integrated into the online platform and dedicated app for iOS.

The new integration makes recurrent training more accessible and convenient than ever. Instead of juggling separate websites, logins, or platforms, pilots can now access both training courses and ongoing proficiency content from a single app.
What makes the Mastery series unique is its focus on scenario-based decision making. Each month, pilots are presented with a realistic VFR or IFR flying challenge that requires evaluating weather, aircraft performance, charts, regulations, airport information, and operational risks before deciding how to proceed.
The process is intentionally interactive:
- Watch a short scenario briefing
- Analyze charts, weather products, and flight data
- Choose a course of action
- Compare your thinking with other pilots
- Learn from detailed instructor analysis
- Listen to roundtable discussions featuring experienced CFIs
It’s a format that works especially well on the iPad, where pilots can comfortably review charts, weather imagery, and flight information on a larger screen while following along with the scenario discussions.
The new app integration also introduces several features that improve the overall experience for pilots who train on the go.
Offline access and syncing
Mastery scenarios can now be downloaded directly inside the Pilot Training app for offline viewing and listening. That means pilots can continue training while traveling, at the airport, or anywhere without a reliable internet connection.
Progress automatically syncs between devices, so you can start a scenario on your iPad at home and finish it later on your iPhone or desktop computer.

Background audio and Apple CarPlay
One of the most practical additions is support for background audio playback. Instructor roundtable discussions can now play like a podcast while using other apps or with the device screen locked.
Sporty’s has also added Apple CarPlay support, allowing pilots to listen to the discussions during a commute or road trip directly through a vehicle’s infotainment system.

Organized archives and saved favorites
Because the Mastery series has been running for years, there is now an extensive archive of VFR and IFR scenarios available inside the app. Pilots can browse scenarios by topic or date and save favorites for quick reference later.
Whether reviewing mountain flying techniques before a western trip or brushing up on IFR weather decisions before winter flying season, the archive becomes a useful on-demand proficiency library.

Automatic FAA WINGS credit
The integration also simplifies participation in the FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program. Completed scenarios qualify for WINGS credit, with the app automatically handling the submission process behind the scenes.

A natural fit for iPad pilots
The addition of VFR Mastery and IFR Mastery feels like a natural expansion of the Pilot Training app ecosystem. Many pilots already use the app for certificate training, flight reviews, and test prep. Adding continuously updated proficiency content extends its usefulness well beyond the checkride.
More importantly, the scenario-based format reflects the way many pilots actually learn best: by thinking through realistic flying situations and hearing how experienced instructors approach the same problem.
The VFR Mastery and IFR Mastery series are available now inside the Sporty’s Pilot Training app. Existing PilotWorkshops subscribers can log in using their current account credentials, and free sample scenarios are available for pilots who want to explore the format before subscribing.
