Garmin has long enjoyed an active partnership between its aviation and non-aviation businesses, sharing engineering and manufacturing resources to offer pilots leading edge products. The focus has evolved over the years as technology and customer preferences change, from portable GPSs in the 2000s to smartwatches in the 2020s (Garmin sold over $340 million worth of fitness devices in 2025 alone). The partnership is paying off: as we reported last fall, the new D2 Air X15 and D2 Mach 2 models pack an incredible number of features into attractive pilot watches and have proven to be quite popular.
Six months later, Garmin is back with a new top-of-the-line model, the D2 Mach 2 Pro, which includes built-in connectivity features that make it a truly standalone tool.
Connectivity—without your phone
The big news is that the D2 Mach 2 Pro includes built-in LTE and Iridium radios, so the watch can keep you connected anywhere you go. While all Garmin smartwatches can connect to your smartphone via the free Garmin Connect app, this requires a constant background Bluetooth connection and a cellular connection on your phone. With the Mach 2 Pro, the data connection is made right from the watch, so you can go for a flight or a run without bringing your phone along.
With an active LTE connection, features include:
- Send and receive text messages using the Garmin Messenger app.
- Make voice calls from the watch using the built-in speaker.
- LiveTrack location sharing allows friends and family to track your adventure.
- Send SOS messages through the Garmin Response coordination center to get help.
- Get updated METARs and TAFs for your favorite airports.
Iridium adds an extra layer of coverage, using the company’s satellite constellation to keep you connected when you’re out of cellular reception. Features are more limited with Iridium—only text messages and location check-ins—but these are available in remote regions that are far beyond LTE range. This is a great feature for pilots who fly in the Rocky Mountains or Canada, where a simple check-in message or an SOS can be a huge safety enhancement.
Garmin has done a great job of maximizing battery life even with these new connectivity options by using the LTE-M network, a lower power system designed for small devices. The D2 Mach 2 Pro will last 24 days in smartwatch mode and 59 hours in aviation mode (with GPS and pulse oximeter running), slightly less than the D2 Mach 2 but dramatically longer than an Apple Watch.
The connectivity features require a monthly subscription, purchased through Garmin, but the plans are very reasonable: just $6.99/mo. for LTE and $7.99/mo. for Iridium. Note that messaging and calls won’t work in flight above 30 knots, so these features are non intended for cockpit use. One other important detail: Iridium coverage is more limited with the watch than it is with a full Garmin inReach device, essentially the continental US, southern Canada, and western Europe.
Plenty of aviation features
These new connectivity options add to a long list of pilot-friendly features, which are shared with the existing D2 Mach 2 models. This really is a fully self-contained aviation navigator:
- Built-in GPS with a full airport database
- Moving map and HSI screens
- Nearest airport and direct-to navigation
- Pulse oximeter for tracking oxygen levels
- Barometric altimeter with vibrating alerts
- Integrated flashlight with red and white lights
- Flight logging, transferable to flyGarmin.com
- Remote fuel status for PlaneSync-equipped airplanes
Fitness and productivity tools
Like all Garmin smartwatches, the D2 Mach 2 Pro is loaded with useful everyday features for organizing your day, tracking your workouts, and monitoring your health. Many of these features are shared with Garmin’s award-winning Fenix line of smartwatches:
- Notifications for emails, messages, and calendar events
- Powerful workout tracking: run, swim, bike
- HRV status and ECG app
- Health snapshot and sleep coach
- Preloaded with golf course and trail maps
- Phone-free music listening with Spotify and Amazon Music
- Garmin Pay contactless payments
- Automatic incident detection and alerting
Comparison
The Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro is available now for $1549.99, just $50 more than the titanium model of the D2 Mach 2. The Pro version comes with a 51mm titanium bezel and both a leather band and a silicone sport band. This is a premium smartwatch for the serious gadget enthusiast, adventure pilot, or athlete, but the list of features is truly impressive. Garmin has also done a nice job of improving its watch interface over the years, so with an hour or two of experimentation it’s easy to use the essential feature.
