How do different sizes of iPad fit in an airplane?


We get a lot of questions from pilots looking to get the best size iPad for their cockpit. It’s a difficult thing to visualize without actually getting the device inside the plane; on top of that, you want to compare one size device to the next. There are over a dozen different sizes of iPads and iPhones that you could be using for your EFB app. In this article, we’re taking a look at the most commonly asked-about sizes. With that in mind, we didn’t examine some of the older generation iPads that might still be hanging on. If that’s your iPad, well it might be time to upgrade to a newer, faster, more capable unit and this article should help you decide.

Yoke mounts are popular – do they work with all iPad models?

Let’s consider seven different size devices in the same Cessna 172 cockpit to see what fits best. We mounted the iPads and iPhone in two ways: with a suction cup and with a yoke mount. We were able to mount nearly every device to the yoke with the exception of the new 12.9” iPad Pro 3rd Gen. Not only would it be too big but there isn’t yet a cradle capable of holding it.

For the suction cup mount, we tried to use our favorite mounting spot – the bottom of the windscreen that wraps around to the left-hand side. This spot sort of extends the glare shield if you line it up right and helps you keep the iPad in your natural instrument scan. A few of these iPads proved to be too big for this location, so we opted to move the suction cup mount to the right-hand side of the plane by the copilot. With the iPad angled toward your view and out of the way of the yoke, it was definitely a good option for those flying with big iPads.

We wanted to give you a reference for the size and potential placement of these devices in the cockpit. Some of these pictures are to prove that it’s not feasible to mount the pictured device as we have. Remember that the final decision to mount your iPad or iPhone is up to the pilot in command, who must consider the safety risks associated with adding gear to the flight deck. Always be sure that you mount your devices with flying in mind first – the last thing you want is to flare on final and find your mount is in the way.

Which iPad do I have?

If you’re not sure which iPad you have, it’s okay, you’re not alone. Please note that we loathe the naming convention Apple has chosen for the iPads as much as you do. It’s difficult to be sure which iPad you have but if you need to look that information up here’s how you do so.

First, identify your iPad’s Model Number. Go to Settings > General > About. You’ll see it listed here on the Model line. If you see a different format of the model number (something like MTFL2LL/A), tap on it once to view it in the format below.

iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd Generation) – Simply laying this iPad against the panel demonstrates how enormous it is compared to the instruments. We don’t recommend you fly like this.

For larger iPads where it’s just not feasible to mount on the pilot’s side, we switched to the copilot’s side. Each of these mounts was placed as low as possible without interfering with the yoke.

After seeing each of these devices in the plane we’ve found some favorites and some disqualifiers. Keeping in mind that the whole point of the iPad or iPhone is to act as your chart or backup attitude indicator, remember that it needs to be useful but most importantly not get in the way of your flying.

Our Favorites

iPad Mini – The iPad mini seems to be ideally sized for the yoke or the suction cup mount. With a screen big enough to utilize split screen features in a form factor that fits in nicely with the instruments, it is our favorite for the plane. There are rumors of a new iPad Mini coming this year so we’ll be anxiously awaiting the announcement by Apple to see what they will have for us.

iPad Air, iPad Pro 9.7, or the 2017 iPad – This unit comes in second. It gives you just a bit more screen space to see everything while still being manageable on a yoke or the suction cup. It may be too large for some to consider mounting on the pilot’s side window, but the co-pilot’s window is a nice alternative. This size iPad also is more useful outside the plane with everyday tasks and traveling than the iPad Mini is.

Honorable Mention

iPhone XS Max – This is the largest iPhone to date in terms of screen size. Its physical footprint is almost identical to the older Plus size models like the 6+, 7+ and 8+ but with the all-screen design, it makes a very nice cockpit companion for yoke or suction cup mounting. The only drawback is you can’t do split screen on the phone with ForeFlight. I’ve been living with this iPhone XS Max for about two months now, upgraded from an iPhone 6. The size difference is nothing you won’t get used to after 24 hrs. If you’re looking to go from two devices to one, I’d highly recommend the XS Max.

What about my larger iPad?

Well if you have the iPad Pro 10.5, you might find it doable in less cramped cockpits. It’s not actually that much bigger than the iPad Air, which we find to be a solid option. So if the 10.5 sounds like the one you want, go for it. On a kneeboard, it can work quite well.

iPad Pro 12.9 1st or 3rd Generation – These big boys are simply oversized for use in the plane in any sort of mounted solution, in my opinion. Maybe with the right kneeboard, you’ll find it usable but remember that what’s most important is that your iPad doesn’t interfere with you while you’re flying. For that reason, I’d say these iPads are better as a reference device that you can lay on the floor the majority of the time and only grab when you want to check on something. This limitation is huge for smaller GA pilots but if you’re flying a big turboprop or a jet and you’ve got the space to reach back in the cabin then you might be alright.

Note that we snapped a picture of the iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Generation laying against the panel of our C172 just for reference. This way you can really see how massive this iPad is. When the day comes that we can replace all our steam gauges with one of these big iPads I’m all for it. The 12.9 1st Generation mounted on the yoke is so large that you can’t even see (or grab) the yoke. Do not mount your iPad this way – it just ain’t right.

iPad Pro 11 – I love this 11 inch iPad. It’s a great computer and wonderful for flight planning. It is, unfortunately, too big to mount on the yoke and must either be used with a suction cup or a kneeboard. If that’s what you want then it’s a great option for pilots.

  1. I purchased the Yoke Mount for my iPad Pro 10.5, flying a Cessna 172 with Garmin G1000, and the iPad blocked most of the Garmin display. Furthermore, I could not secure the Yoke Mount tight enough to prevent the iPad from moving while in flight. The products purchased from Sportys for my iPad are the MYGOFLIGHT iPad cradle and iPad Yoke Mount. I would like to see the same iPad tests presented in this article performed in a 172 with Garmin G1000.

    • I see lots of kneeboards in SR20s and SR22s. Some pilots use the claw yoke mount to mount onto the bar just under the panel and then use the arm to tilt the iPad up towards the pilot, but it’s a little clunky. For an iPad Mini, the suction cup in the left corner works, but the larger iPads start to interfere with the side stick.

  2. No doubt in my mind that iPad Mini 4 is the best all round device for pilots. Most GA cockpits are a challenge for anything bigger, and I’ve flown everything from PA28s to Kodiaks. Even Piper’s M600 presented major space challenges. My mount of choice is the MyGoFlight sport suction cup system. The articulating arm makes it possible to “float” the iPad anywhere you want it. I leave the MGF sport shell on the iPad all the time, and it works with Apple’s magnetic screen cover, which I remove in flight. I also have the yoke clamp version of this mount, but rarely use it. Unfortunately, MGF products have become extremely pricy lately.

  3. I have several iPads from the iPad mini up to the 12 inch. I also got an iPhone X just because of ForeFlight.
    I also have all of these mounting options and more. I have tried them all.
    The yoke mount means the maps will move around. The left side window mount is very hard to manage when changing instrument approaches unless you are left handed. I like to fly with my left hand and type with my right hand. The right hand window mount is just too far away for it to be useful. I got a RAM mount that clips to the instrument glare shield but it is not very strong, holds at best an iPhone, and it tends to block view of compass (I bet it also effects the compass) or lower instruments.
    I keep going back to the knee board placement. It just seems natural, but because of my size the larger ones get in the way of the yoke during preflight check of free controls, so I never use the larger one unless it is flying free across my lap. Which is not good if there is turbulence.
    This makes only the iPad mini as a choice for flying. To keep the iPad steady I found the Pivot case and leg mount as the best solution, because it provides great protection and a steady long or tall view with just a twist. If I was smaller, or in a Cirrus, I would and do use the larger iPads with the same leg mount.

  4. I’ve been using Ram Mounts since they were first adapted to the cockpit (I first used it on a GPS696). So two thoughts:
    1) Ram Mount sells a 1″ double ball adapter that allows a lower positioning of the device below the ram’s horns, and also gives a clear(er!) view of the instrument panel.
    2) All things considered, I’d have a preference for a large iPad placed on the non-flying side of the cockpit.

    And one last thing: large iPads “throw” a lot of weight and have a large turn radius, so keep in mind that every Ram Mount addition somewhat compounds the problem. It is incumbent on the PIC to ensuring the device doesn’t interfere with control yoke movement.

  5. I have found a knee board to be far and above the best option making it useful in turbulence as you can use the heel of your hand to steady your fingers for precise and efficient control. Mounts are for fair weather flying only.

  6. I totally disagree with your perspective regarding the 3rd generation ipad 12.9. Due to reduced borders, its not that much bigger than the original full size ipad. I fly a Piper Archer and use the X-grip mounted to the yoke with the ipad in landscape orientation and angled slightly to make it easy to read. It’s far enough forward that the instruments are always in full view, and the screen is fantastic, allowing me to use split screen capabilities of ForeFlight.

  7. I still wonder why the yoke mount is not banned from small aircraft. We found it doing substantial alterations to the behavior of autopilots and it does distract people by a rotating map. I started to use a Mini on a yoke mount and rather quick went to a fixed to the cockpit mounted RAM ball (RAM-B-202U), now with only an iPhone as backup iPad.

    Did you mount your paper charts wit ha newspaper clip before? No? Why do you want to do that with an iPad? I started using a big iPad as paper replacement, either on kneeboard or just like the old charts, free to move.

  8. I wish I had this article a month ago when I purchased the iPad mini 4! The article is a great idea, but executed poorly. I can’t see over the cowling in the photos, so I question the perspective and the ability/inability to see over the electronic device to the instrument panel.

  9. I’ve used the iPad mini 2 in my Piper Warrior cockpit for years. Tried several yoke and window mounts but found all to be cumbersome, especially due to the overheating factor from the Florida sun. Finally have settled into the X-Nav cooling platform with a Ram mount ball attached which I use as a hand grip. Solved the overheating problem and gives me flexibility of holding the mini and cooling system in my right hand while I control the yoke with my left (or vice versa as desired). I did add some soft Velcro to cover the Ram mount screws which were scratching my fingers. May eventually upgrade to the new iPad mini or mini 4, but Foreflight works fine on the iPad mini 2.

  10. My best solution was to change one of the instrument blanks in the right side near the radios into anrubber blank with a slit in center. Have av teck mount the ram double swivel to the air hole tube behind the panel and coming out of the instrument blank with the far right side grip mount the ipad is on the right out of way but not so far right you cant reach it.   11. I bought an iPad Pro 12.9 Gen3+cellular and frankly I’m disappointed with its in-flight performance, let alone its sheer massiveness in the cockpit. After flying with an iPad Air 2+cellular for about 4 years, I had gotten used to opening ForeFlight and immediately getting 5m GPS accuracy without Stratus. With the Pro I get very poor GPS reception, often no fix without Stratus. Also, Apple designed the Pro gen 3 with a series of high strength magnets it’s back to make it compatible with some of their cases. Note to buyers: BE CAREFUL NOT TO LAY THIS DEVICE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR MAGNETIC COMPASS!
