Sporty’s Pilot Training app has helped tens of thousands of pilots earn their pilot certificates, add new ratings, learn how to use various advanced avionics systems and get checked out in new aircraft types. The platform is famous for its fast pace of innovation, bringing new content, new training tools, and technological enhancements every year.
Pilot Training offers pilots the ultimate flexibility in training, providing access to all of Sporty’s aviation courses on dedicated iPhone and iPad apps, Mac app, an Android app, a Windows 11 app, online and on the TV, using the included apps for AppleTV, FireTV, AndroidTV, Roku and Chromecast.
Sporty’s signature flight training app received another big update this month and includes Sporty’s 2024 Learn to Fly, Instrument Rating and Commerical Pilot Test Prep courses. In addition to new 4K video content and updated FAA test prep questions, the app was updated with a new Mac app, CarPlay app, SharePlay support for remote learning and adds a new interactive FAR/AIM tool (check out the video at the end of this article to see all the features in action).
New video segments
The heart of Sporty’s course has always been the dynamic video segments. From your first flight all the way through checkride, you’ll see what to expect and you’ll learn how to master complicated maneuvers. The team at Sporty’s is continuously updating and expanding these videos to keep up with both changing technology and the latest training techniques.
New for 2024 are major updates to segments on runway safety, wake turbulence, and using both digital and paper charts. Plus, we’ve completely reorganized the Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot courses to flow more logically and cover each topic in detail. As usual, our videos focus on real-world flying and practical tips, not just memorization.
Interactive scenarios
After completing the core video lessons, students can access over 20 new interactive scenarios in each course. These allow you to put what you learned into practice, by interacting with sectional charts, VOR simulators, airport environments, flight maneuvers, performance charts, airplane systems and much more.
Focused FARs
The Federal Aviation Regulations can be daunting for any pilot, regardless of experience level. To help pilots make sense of the FARs while working towards a Private or Commercial certificate or Instrument Rating, Sporty’s offers a new focused view of just the FARs that are pertinent to your training in that section of the app.
For example, select the Private Pilot FARs to only show the regulations that affect that type of flying. This instantly changes the focus from thousands of pages to just the essential regulations, making the review process much more manageable.
Smart notes
Sporty’s course is loaded with information, from video segments to FAA handbooks to test prep sessions. Now there’s a centralized tool in the online version of the course to help you organize your key takeaways, easily accessible no matter where you are in the course. Simply click or tap the floating “New Note” button at the bottom right of the screen and the Smart Notes interface will appear.
You can add as many notes as you’d like and keep them organized with a simple menu system. When adding a new note from any of the video lessons, the note will automatically insert the name of the lesson and generate a clickable link that you can use to jump back to that lesson when reviewing your notes later.
Aviation Blogs, Podcasts and Webinars too
Sporty’s Pilot Training app also added a new menu on the bottom of the home screen providing students and pilots with quick access to Sporty’s comprehensive library of free flight training blogs, aviation podcasts and webinar recordings. Select the Free Content tab and any one of the options to quickly read, listen to or watch the latest aviation-themed content.
Podcasts load in the app’s audio player and will continue to play while you use other parts of the Pilot Training app or other apps on your iPhone or iPad. All of these resources are completely free and do not require the user to purchase a course first.
Windows tablet app
Train anywhere, anytime—that’s always been Sporty’s promise. A single purchase includes lifetime access to the Learn to Fly Course on a huge variety of platforms. The latest addition means you can now use Sporty’s Pilot Training on your Windows device—perfect for studying on a Surface tablet. Progress is automatically synced between devices, so it’s easy to switch back and forth as your study sessions move.
How to get the courses
All of these upgrades join an already impressive list of features, including powerful FAA knowledge test prep tools. The Learn to Fly Course includes a proprietary database of over 1,000 FAA test questions, customizable study modes, and unlimited practice tests. You can even earn an automatic flight instructor endorsement to take the test when you’re done.
You can purchase access to any of the 30 aviation training courses right from Sporty’s website, including the 2024 Learn to Fly, Instrument Rating Course and Commercial Pilot Course. You’ll gain instant access to all the course platforms for one price. If you’ve already purchased one of these courses (both courses include lifetime updates), you just need to download the mobile app and sign in with your username/password or log in to Sporty’s Online Course Portal.
Each course purchase includes lifetime updates, allowing customers who previously purchased any of these courses to automatically receive the new features after updating to the latest version of the Pilot Training app.
