Flying with an iPad has become the norm in our flying, but it has also introduced a few unique challenges. How do you keep the tablet secure on your leg without blocking the side buttons? How do you deal with cockpit glare without awkwardly twisting your neck mid-flight?
Sporty’s recently refreshed its entire Flight Gear Kneeboard lineup to tackle these exact real-world issues. While the new collection includes updated Bi-Fold and Tri-Fold options, the standout for iPad EFB users is the new Flight Gear iPad Organizer Kneeboard.
We took a closer look at how this new organizer holds up in the cockpit.

Smart Tablet Integration (Without the Button Clashes)
If you’ve ever used a universal kneeboard, you know the frustration of an elastic strap perfectly aligning with your iPad’s volume or power buttons. The iPad Organizer Kneeboard solves this with movable elastic retention straps. You can adjust the placement to ensure your screen remains totally unobstructed and your buttons don’t get accidentally pressed in turbulence.
The kneeboard is available in two sizes:
-
Small: Tailored for 8-inch tablets like the iPad Mini.
-
Large: Designed for standard 9.7” to 11” iPads (and it’s roomy enough to accommodate most protective cases).
Defeating Cockpit Glare
Screen glare is the ultimate nemesis of the iPad cockpit. One of the most practical features of this kneeboard is the integrated rear kickstand. When the sun hits the screen at an awkward angle, you can flip the kickstand out to angle the iPad toward your line of sight, instantly cutting down on reflections. When you’re done, it folds completely flat so the kneeboard isn’t bulky when packed away in your flight bag.
Organization and “Gear Mod” Customization
Beyond holding the tablet, the kneeboard acts as a mini-flight desk. It features an exterior chart/notepad pocket, a dedicated pen loop, a flat storage pocket, and a soft pocket with a flap—perfect for housing a backup battery or charging cables.
Because it’s part of the Flight Gear ecosystem, the interior features a soft felt “gear wall.” This allows you to attach Sporty’s hook-and-loop Gear Mods, meaning you can slap on an extra cable organizer or transceiver holder depending on what your flight requires. When the flight is over, the side flaps fold completely over the iPad screen to keep it protected while stowed.
