ForeFlight has launched a major upgrade to its approach chart capabilities with the debut of Dynamic Procedures, a new feature that transforms how pilots brief and fly instrument approaches. The feature is available in ForeFlight’s latest release, version 17.7.4. Building on the foundation laid by Procedure Advisor (introduced in 2015) and Augmented Procedures (launched in 2021), this latest enhancement brings it all together—delivering a more intuitive, context-driven IFR experience.

Streamlined, Context-Aware IFR Briefing

At the heart of Dynamic Procedures is a new sidebar that integrates directly into the Maps view, replacing static plates with a live, data-driven interface tailored to your route and selections. Once you choose an approach, transition, and minimums, the sidebar displays only the information relevant to your flight—clearly organized by phase and easily accessible during high workload phases.

After selecting an approach, transition, and minimums from Procedure Advisor, tap the square button in the top-right corner of the map to open the procedure sidebar containing key procedure details.

What’s Included in Dynamic Procedures?

  • Tailored Approach Sidebar
Once you select an approach, transition, and minimums, a new sidebar organizes the procedure into a clear, logically ordered format—highlighting only the relevant details for your flight. Everything from communication frequencies to step-down fixes and minimums is included.

  • Context-Aware Briefing Strip
A briefing strip along the top of the screen displays key information in the order you’ll need it, including final approach course, DA/MDA, and touchdown zone elevation.

  • Per-Segment Guidance
Each leg of your selected transition and approach is broken down by course, distance, and altitude—helping to reduce workload during high-stress phases of flight.

  • Visualized MSA
Minimum Safe Altitudes are now overlaid directly on the map, including segmented MSAs by radial and altitude.

ForeFlight displays the approach’s MSA directly on the map as an orange circle.

  • 3D Airport and Approach View
Preview the approach lighting system and touchdown zone from a simulated short final, or open the full 3D airport view to explore runway lights and terrain features.

Multiple 3D views of the runway integrated into the sidebar provide realistic views of the approach lighting system and short final.

  • Dynamic Profile View
ForeFlight’s Profile View now includes a dynamic depiction of the approach path with real-time altitude and terrain awareness. A dotted glideslope extension aids in intercepting the glideslope early for a smooth, stabilized descent.

The Future of Chartless IFR

Unlike traditional charts, Dynamic Procedures are rendered directly onto the map, placing them in context with traffic, terrain, weather, and routing. It’s a complete rethinking of how instrument procedures are presented—designed to reduce single-pilot workload and to support safer, more intuitive flying.

Available Now

Dynamic Procedures is initially available for the U.S. and Canada regions. All customers in supported regions may access the feature as part of a limited 3-month preview, after which it will require ForeFlight’s Essential subscription plan or above.

Business accounts will also have access at launch (disabled by default), allowing operators to align activation with OpSpecs and pilot training. Admins can manage access via ForeFlight Web.
