Garmin Pilot expands coverage into Canada
The app developers at Garmin have been very busy this year increasing the international coverage provided by the Garmin Pilot app for iPhone and iPad. Back in July Garmin began offering a Global Premium package that provides Jeppesen worldwide NavData and global weather in the app, along with the ability to purchase chart packages for individual European countries a la carte. The latest update adds a similar upgrade option for Canada that offers a comprehensive suite of navigation and weather information for both Canada and the US.
The North American navigation data included with the Canada Premium subscription is provided by Jeppesen and provides all the data needed for flight planning and in-flight navigation. The interactive maps within Garmin Pilot support north-up and track-up navigation in Canada so maps, their labels and the information displayed on the map is upright and easy to read. Geo-referenced FliteCharts include approaches, departures and arrival procedures and SafeTaxi incorporates geo-referenced airport diagrams in Canada.
The Canadian package adds full satellite and radar coverage for both the US and Canada. As with the other subscriptions offered by Garmin, you’ll get worldwide lightning, METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs and Winds Aloft with this package.
With this upgrade Garmin Pilot will display Canadian terrain information on the dedicated terrain page or as an overlay on the moving map and pop-up alerts warn of nearby obstacles or terrain. Synthetic vision (SVX) offers a 3D depiction of ground, water, obstacles, terrain and the runway environment adding additional situational awareness when navigating unfamiliar areas.
The Garmin Pilot Canada Premium subscription is available for $129.99 as an in-app purchase.
Support for Canada is stil l’ont very good.
VFR and IFR maps are sill not fully available.
I believe garmin added the approach plates and some other info, but it is far complete. Foreflight support for canada is much better
