Many pilots use their iPhone as a primary electronic flight bag (EFB) in the cockpit, thanks to its portability and ever-increasing screen size. It also makes a great backup to the iPad since it’s probably in your pocket already.
A single aviation app subscription works on multiple devices, and there is near full feature parity between the iPad and iPhone versions of ForeFlight and Garmin Pilot. This allows you to take advantage of every flight planning and in-flight weather and navigation capability from anywhere on your phone.
The iPhone is also a great EFB solution for smaller cockpits since it can be mounted in more locations without blocking the instrument panel or visibility out the window. Our new favorite iPhone mount comes from Robust, which uses the MagSafe magnets in newer iPhones to attach to the mount. MagSafe is a hidden design feature on the back of iPhone 12 or newer and was designed as a wireless charging option, using strong magnets to secure compatible chargers.
The new Robust Magsafe mount uses a strong suction cup to grip any window or smooth surface firmly. The MagSafe attachment includes twenty N52-grade neodymium magnets that securely hold your iPhone in place through the roughest turbulence or flight maneuvering. The MagSafe attachment is an improvement over traditional clamp-style mounts, allowing you to easily attach and remove your iPhone from the mount with one hand.
The kit also includes an adhesive magnet to attach to non-Magsafe devices to use with the mount. Note that this mount only uses the MagSafe attachment to secure the iPhone and not to charge it.
