Radio Navigation Simulator app updated

Radio Navigation app

The Radio Navigation Simulator app features a moving map and simulated panel display.

Even with glass cockpits becoming increasingly popular, student pilots and new instrument pilots still have a lot to learn about navigation instruments. The Radio Navigation Simulator app can help. This affordable, easy-to-use app is a great way to learn how to use VOR, DME, ADF, RMI and HSI in the cockpit (yes, all of those instruments are covered).

With a simulated panel and moving map, it’s easy to drag the airplane around to different locations and watch the needles react. This is ideal for home study or for ground lessons, and the app has become very popular with flight instructors. There are plenty of customization options too: change navaid frequencies, turn the OBS knob, change the panel layout and even change the wind speed and direction. You can even fly a 200nm trip to see different scenarios en route.

The app has been out for a while, but it’s recently been updated with some nice new features:

  • HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator) is now an option on the simulated panel. There’s a lot going on with the average HSI, so this app is a great way to learn its secrets.
  • While less popular, the app also has an option to show a dual needle RMI. This is helpful for professional pilot training, since an RMI is found in many turbine aircraft.
  • There are now more options for configuring the flight panel instruments (five).
  • Mini flight panels now have more realistic instruments for a better simulated environment.
  • Support for iPhone 5, iPad mini and iOS6 (on the iPhone 5 there is a 40% increased chart area), so you can use the app on almost any iOS device.

Radio Navigation Simulator is only $8.99. Learn more or buy the app here.
